Each of us have different set of values that we acquired through the years. It starts in our home and got strengthened in our school. There are also a strong set of morals and ethics that we developed based on our beliefs and life principles.

Unsurprisingly, these are also important qualities that are usually talked about when you apply for work. Whatever your current values are, they will play a huge role when you look for a job and once that you’re already part of an organization. Even companies also make their values and ethics visible for their own employees and customers.

It’s beneficial to know what list of personal values you currently have. This allows you to openly discuss it during an interview to sell yourself without contradicting your responses to their questions.

You may have one or more of these values.  In order to discover your own set values and beliefs, we compiled a number of questions that you can use as guide questions. Go ahead and answer each as honestly as you can.

NOTE: You don’t have to show it to anyone, keep it to yourself. This is a good exercise to find out what you believe in to make it easier for you to both your personal and work life.

  1. Who are the people that you look up to or personal role models? You surely have people you admire and respect. Write their names down, it may be an older brother, an aunt, your father or an elderly in the community- even a celebrity or a public figure.
  2. What do you like about them? 
  3. What are some of their characteristics that you would like to have as well?
  4. What are their achievements?
  5. What motivates you to work towards your goal?

We have different reasons why we take action. It may be because of the recognition, the learning, or your willingness to help others. Whatever your answer is, this will help you define your true values. Answer the following questions as honestly as you can to discover what matters for you:

  1. What do you love doing?
  2. What do you care about the most?
  3. What are you willing to lose to achieve your goal?
  4. How did you feel when you achieved your goal?

Answer these questions to help you define your values. Doing this will also allow you to find your life’s purpose. This is not an easy task but if you know your true self and commit to your values, it will be easier to figure out what you’re meant to do.

A clear understanding of your own values also allows you to control how to behave in awkward situations. When you know who you truly are, acting in challenging circumstances will be easy. Knowing your personal values will also help you to stay confident even in tough situations because you know what to do.

Making tough choices. When you weigh your options and need to decide you can lean on your true values in order to make the right choice. It will help you do what is in the best interest of everyone.

Developing your character and self confidence. A strong set of values creates an unshakeable self-image. This is where your core being gets it’s set of rules. If you believe in integrity, self-reliance, and loyalty, this will show everything in what you do.
