We know very well how to speak our native dialects. Depending on where we were born and raised, this is our first language will and we use it most when thinking and speaking. But having a second language and being able to speak it fluently (and confidently) will increase your chances of getting hired and give you an edge over those who only know their native language. An ideal second language to speak fluently is the English language since it’s widely used for businesses both local and globally.
For many Filipinos, we speak our own dialect and can also confidently talk in Filipino. But it would be best if we can also speak English without hesitation and confidently express ourselves with this language.
Here are a few ways that you can use to enhance your English speaking skills:
Reading is the first thing that you need to do to enhance your English skills. Read relevant news about the industry that you are in. This gives you information about your field and helps you develop your English comprehension.
Instead of watching sitcoms and primetime shows in Tagalog or any other dialect, its better to start viewing movies or shows in English. This can train you to catch English phrases and words that you can use in daily conversations.
It’s also important that you practice what you have learned, practice writing and speaking in English everytime you have the chance. This will fortify the usage of the language. Remember, it’s best to think in English and not with your local dialect to achieve a better flow of thought.
Turn it into a Habit
Take time to write and speak in the English language. If you don’t give it a specific time, you won’t be able to accomplish anything. Choose a particular time of the day to practice your writing and speaking, give it at least 30 minutes to an hour each day. Make it regular and it becomes a habit.
Track your Progress
Every single day that you read, write, and speak English is a big win for you as an employee or a job seeker. It will move you slowly but surely toward the direction of fluency in the English language. What you need to have is a simple tracker where you will note your reading, writing or speaking activity each day.
Tagalog or Filipino may not be the spoken language in a particular region. But most businesses use the English language as means of communicating with their clients and employees. It is safe to say that if you can speak and write English fluently you have a greater chance of getting hired and possibly get ahead in the company that you are working for. With this being said applicants and employees should strive to be fluent in both written and spoken English. We hope that this article gave you insights and guidelines on what to do to improve your English language skills.
